A story that beckons us to pause and reflect. This narrative, woven from the threads of memory and dreams, invites us into the sanctity of an ancient house—a place where the walls echo with tales of togetherness, resilience, and the simple beauty of everyday life. May this tale touch your heart as deeply as it has touched mine.

In my dream that day, I saw the large house where I used to live in my hometown in the South, with blue bricks and black tiles, towering white walls. Stone flowers and plump cacti sprouted from the gaps between the tiled roof and the ancient, stone-carved wall. The inside of the house alternated between shadow and light, with wooden stairs that were both too narrow and too worn out. Each row of rooms was built entirely out of wood, the walls, the floors, the doors and windows, all deepened to a dark yellow color, weathered by rain and eaten away by mold. Atop the roof was a mezzanine-style window, known as a “tiger window”. Swallows nested beneath the eaves, their young black birds flitting by occasionally. A bamboo pole beside the window was laden with the family’s clothes, in all manners of styles and colors. The sunlight was radiant. The sound of laughter and children playing echoed through the long alley.

Houses built in this architectural style had once been the residence of large clans, then was later seized by the government, and all manner of families moved in. Most lacked their own kitchens and bathrooms; each family had to to keep a potty in their bedroom. The kitchen is shared by all residents; the coal stoves and gas stoves of all the families congregated in one place. In my childhood, those rooms felt immeasurably mysterious, like a labyrinth. The hallway twisted and turned, the kitchen dark, lit only once a day by the late afternoon sun, when a sliver of sunlight could manage to penetrate through a high glass door. The old rooms were so tightly packed; opening one door might reveal another’s bedroom or living room. The kitchenware and cabinets were outdated, a Tam Ngu brand tabletop clock ticking away, sofas draped with hand-crocheted white lace. Some homes had iron four-poster beds, topped with embroidered canopies, looking like extremely safe boat cabins.

Life was crowded in those rooms. Public existence unfolded like a stage play, where all was laid bare. Families squeezed into this space, their cooking, laundering, toilet scrubbing, spousal arguments, and children’s cries were witnessed firsthand by all others. The joys, sorrows, and hardships of each family were as plain as their dinner menus, impossible to conceal. Life was simple. Yet, despite all that, the cleanliness, orderliness, and joyfulness of the Southern folk still emanated a warm embrace in their everyday essentials, and in their every gesture. Day by day, they settled through the seasons in the small city.

The wooden floor was mopped with clean water daily, gradually bleaching to a gray-white color. Food was chosen and prepared with care. The men went out to work, while women sewed, cooked, and washed, children calling out their peers for play. The greenery was tended with care, flourishing wildly. Morning glories climbed everywhere, fragrant honeysuckles, vibrant camellias, and hyssops, with poincianas and sunflowers forming a colorful array at the wall’s base. These robust blossoms adorned the ordinary home and the barren yard. Some even cultivated lotuses in clay jars; come summer, the large red blooms exuded a heady fragrance, astonishing onlookers. In the shadowy water jars used for collecting rainwater, goldfish were kept, growing plump and comically silent.

Come autumn, large white chrysanthemums burst forth among the green leaves, each bloom vigorously – the product of utmost love and care by some anonymous member of the household. My friends and I played hide and seek, darting back and forth like shuttles across the damp yard, our eyes catching only glimpses of the eerie white blooms bowing in the dimming light, their thin, long petals catching the dying day’s sun, reflected off the tall western wall. That wall engraved itself in my heart like rubies and pearls accidentally nestled within my chest, shining brightly. Yet, I was naively unafraid, utterly unalarmed by such splendor.

She is nicknamed “Flower in the Dark” by her readers due to her novels’ themes of loneliness and isolation. Li currently lives in Beijing.

In her early twenties, Li worked at a bank in Ningbo, but her distaste for the job led her to begin her career as an online writer in 1998. In 2000, she began writing for the website Rongshuxia, which was one of China’s first literary forums. In that same year, she published Goodbye, Vivian, a collection of short stories; this was her first print publication, and would sell half a million copies.

Bìm bìm leo khắp nơi, kim ngân thơm ngát, hoa trà và tường vi rực rỡ, phượng tiên và hướng dương nở đầy thành một mảng dưới chân tường. Chúng đều là những loài hoa khỏe khoắn, tô điểm cho khu nhà bình thường và mảnh sân hoang tàn. Có người còn trồng sen trong vại sành, đến mùa hạ, những bông hoa to đỏ rực nở rộ, tỏa hương ngào ngạt, khiến người ta kinh ngạc. Trong ang nước tối om để hứng nước mưa có thả cá vàng, chúng được nuôi đến béo ú nom rất ngộ nghĩnh, không hề phát ra tiếng động.

Mùa thu, cúc đại đóa trắng nở rộ giữa đám lá xanh, bông nào bông nấy khỏe khoắn, chẳng biết nhà nào nâng niu chăm cúc đến nhường ấy. Tôi cùng đám bạn chơi trốn tìm, chạy qua chạy lại như thoi đưa trong mảnh sân ướt át, chỉ thấy những đóa hoa trắng kỳ dị lay động giữa bóng tối chập choạng, thấp thoáng ánh dương nhảy nhót trên chóp những cánh hoa dài mảnh, là bóng chiều từ bức tường cao phía Tây hắt lại. Cảnh tượng ấy in vào lòng như hồng ngọc và trân châu vô tình rơi vào lồng ngực, lấp lánh sáng rõ. Mà tôi ngu ngơ, chẳng mảy may kinh hoảng trước những hoa lệ ấy.

Tác giả: An Ni Bảo Bối (安妮宝贝)

An Ni Bảo Bối tên thật là Lệ Tiệp, sinh ngày 11-7-1974 tại Chiết Giang, là một “mỹ nữ viết văn” danh tiếng của nền văn học đương đại Trung Quốc. Cô là nhà văn tự do, từng làm các nghề quảng cáo, biên tập, giao dịch tài chính… Hiện nay cô được coi là nhà văn đắt giá nhất đại lục – theo nghĩa đen là được trả nhuận bút cao nhất cho các tác phẩm của mình – vượt qua cả Vương Sóc, nhà văn từng có một thời gian khá lâu đứng trên “bục danh dự” này.

Truyện của cô thường mô tả đời sống nội tâm thấm kín, những số phận éo le, những con người lang thang, phiêu bạt trong thành phố công nghiệp và hiện đại hóa, tìm kiếm cái tôi trong tình yêu và ảo giác…

Gấm Hoa Giữa Đời (tên gốc “Tố Niên Cẩm Thời”) là Tiểu thuyết theo thể loại Tản văn, An Ni Bảo Bối dùng hình thức “tự trò chuyện” để viết, từng câu từng chữ, đều là những lời tâm tình xuất phát từ những cảm xúc nồng ấm và chân thật.

“Một năm qua, những gì tôi viết chính là một cuốn sách như thế. Là một mình ngồi dưới bóng nắng nơi hành lang, khung thêu căng mảnh lụa mỏng màu lam nhạt, thông thả se chỉ luồn kim, thêu uyên ương, mẫu đơn, trăng thu, áng mây… Tự biết chẳng có công dụng gì, chỉ là ngồi yên làm việc thì trong lòng vui vẻ. Người đó thêu xong, một người khác nhàn rỗi vô sự cầm lên ngắm. Lúc này hoa rụng trong sân bị gió thổi đi xa, chim khách cất tiếng hót trong trẻo. Hoàng hôn trời đổ mưa, sau khi mưa tạnh, có ánh trăng nhàn nhạt leo lên ngọn cây.

Thời gian cứ thế trôi qua thì tốt biết bao.”
