Once popular everywhere, in today’s age of YouTube and streaming sites, DVD shops are on their last legs.
The maximalist visuals, with all the performers on the cover, was jarring. The designs were a mix of signature Vietnamese typographies with attention-grabbing color palettes ranging from lush green to sunset orange, creating an iconic expression of camp that could easily be part of a course called Exploring 2000s Vietnamese Aesthetics 101.
Once upon a time, it was really, really hard to halt the growth of pirated DVD/CD stores in Hanoi. Nowadays, if you take a peek into the window of Hàng Bài Street’s former counterfeit/bootleg DVD stores, here are a few things you will see: CD covers of Taylor Swift albums before her bleached-haired era, a copy of “Now That’s What I Call Music 54,” a Dawn of The Planet of the Apes knock-off, a recording of “Cats” (the musical album, not the film). The entire store is stuck in a not-so-distant past, without any seller or customer. In a bustling Hanoi, the once so-called “Capital of Bootlegs” now lies humbly, nestled quietly in a dormitory’s front corner.
In the 1980s and 1990s, devices such as video recorders, CD players, and televisions used to be pretty strange and new to those of my parents’ age. Now, such things are only remnants of the past. People no longer need them for media screenings. If one mentions the era of pirated DVDs now, everyone will probably recognize it, but few will be able point out on a map where to find these past relics.
As Tết is already around the corner, I am reminded of the many headlines I saw when I was younger, discussing the pressing issue of bootlegs and counterfeits — stories of the local police unearthing thousands of pirated CDs around Tết, as comedy knock-offs were much more sought-after in the absence of TV reruns. The general journalistic viewpoint of the day was that these products brought about unfair competition to genuine record companies and raised serious censorship concerns.
But as a person who grew up with bootlegged media, I do not think that pirated discs were merely something irrelevant at best and harmful at worst. Instead, I believe that the practice of buying bootlegs has its charms that one can only understand by having experienced it.
Hanoi’s cheap entertainment capital
In the early 2000s, the prevalence of pirated discs in Hanoi was at an all-time high. Vendors of pirated DVDs were everywhere across “chợ Giời” and chợ Đồng Xuân, or were scattered across the facades of residential buildings on streets such as Thợ Nhuộm and Hàng Bài.
Pirated discs were a lucrative business back in the day. In 2007, an article on Quân Đội Nhân Dân reported that while authentic music CDs were sold for VND28,000–35,000, a bootleg version could sell for a fraction of the price at VND6,000–8,000. Using a CD burner was the go-to technology to transmit data onto blank discs, each costing only VND4,000, in the 2000s. Authentic DVD shops were only patronized if one wanted to buy rarities, such as Hollywood classics or Decca new releases.

Above all, genuine discs of Paris by Night, the absolute pinnacle of overseas Vietnamese entertainment and a household favorite of the time, were expensive and hard to find in Vietnam. The show’s evergreen popularity was what drove many viewers to the arms of bootleg sellers. Apart from Paris by Night DVDs, video recordings of live shows by big names such as Mỹ Tâm, Bằng Kiều, and Lệ Quyên came second. Teenagers and young adults in the late 2010s were the primary audience for foreign films. Posters of The Mummy Returns, Mission Impossible, Harry Potter and other Hollywood blockbusters were plastered all over DVD stores to attract passersby.
Lastly, an enduring variety of bootlegs, embraced mainly by older Vietnamese unfamiliar with the internet, were ABBA and Boney M CDs. To this day, owners of the few pirated DVD businesses left on Hàng Bài Street still keep these two European classics as mainstays in their collections.
The quirky charm of the bootleg experience
Buying DVDs hearkens back to a nostalgic age before the advent of streaming sites or even internet downloads. In Hanoi’s DVD stores, people once gathered on tiny plastic chairs reminiscent of typical trà đá hangouts, striking a balance between this practice’s makeshift and communal nature. Meanwhile, the physical appearance of these CDs is essentially camp. The maximalist visuals, with all the performers on the cover, was jarring. The designs were a mix of signature Vietnamese typographies with attention-grabbing color palettes ranging from lush green to sunset orange, creating an iconic expression of camp that could easily be part of a course called Exploring 2000s Vietnamese Aesthetics 101.
True to the spirits of counterfeit media, the employees were often obviously bored and unexcited about their products. Unlike one “specialist” film guy who sold authentic DVDs for a living — but primarily for passion — that I met in Hanoi, who would update his regular customers about the new Marilyn Monroe box set that he just got off Amazon, shopkeepers at bootleg stores could not care less about the content of the DVDs that buyers were looking for.
Due to the high number of customers, especially near the year-end season, bootleg stores were manned by a bunch of 20-somethings, most often members of the owners’ family. Customers would ask for a specific DVD just to receive a stack of CDs of the same genre tied together with a classic rubber yellow band, alongside a half-hearted instruction: “It might be in here, just pick one.” Picking DVDs, however, could also be a game of chance, as one may stumble on unexpected hidden gems.

The widespread existence of bootlegs in households speaks volumes about the mindset that many Hanoians I knew adopted, at a time when entertainment was far from abundant. In other words, because the selections were less diverse than they are now, it was common to watch one DVD or listen to one CD repeatedly. This repetition creates a strange sense of emotional attachment to the object — a sense of treasured ownership makes the entire experience of keeping bootlegs so endearing.
Like any other form of nostalgia, that of bootlegs can also be easily blown out of proportion. In all honesty, there is no denying that the quality of the bootlegs was quite bad and could easily harm the DVD players because of their low quality. At times, I’ve experienced scratching noises, overwritten human voices in children’s films, and discs with only Portuguese subtitles — this was particularly bizarre because it happened to me twice. However, these peculiarities became unique to the bootleg experience, constituting its charm. Any buyer of pirated DVDs accepted their flawed copies as is.
However, perhaps the most hilarious part of watching pirated DVDs was how terrible the Vietnamese dubs were in most cases. Not only was the dubbed Vietnamese noticeably inaudible, but it was commonly out-of-sync. Anyone, even non-English speakers, could immediately pick up on this. Despite this flaw, the purchase of a new disc usually meant an occasion to invite one’s best buddies over for a viewing session together.
Remembering bootlegs — both the bad and the good
It is worth noting that I’m not writing this fond reflection to defend piracy or make any definitive case for piracy as a part of culture. At the same time, one can acknowledge the helpfulness of these DVDs in providing entertainment to underprivileged people with no expenses for genuine discs. While bootlegs and counterfeits made films and recordings more accessible to the impoverished, it is essential to acknowledge their negative effect on Vietnamese creatives. Historically, bootlegging has prevented many musicians and filmmakers from profiting from their intellectual products, and online piracy is still very much a concern for artists today. This rather contentious issue raises the question of how they should be remembered.
In my mind, bootlegs and counterfeits occupy a unique space in a cultural memory that is neither romantic nor particularly ethical. If the campy and maximalist aesthetics still stand out for anyone today, it must be among the geeks who were so psyched about CDs that they grow up to be film majors, or older Vietnamese who struggle to navigate cyber media. In the end, bootlegs and counterfeits are not to be condoned but rather remembered as folds in time, representing an era in which cheap means of entertainment such as fake CDs had their own aesthetics and quirky charm — an endearing period of adolescence for many.

Từng phổ biến ở khắp mọi nơi, trong thời đại YouTube và các trang phát trực tuyến ngày nay, các cửa hàng DVD đang ở quãng đời cuối cùng của mình.
Hình ảnh theo chủ nghĩa tối đa, với tất cả những người biểu diễn trên trang bìa, thật nhiều đến chướng cả mắt. Các thiết kế là sự kết hợp giữa kiểu chữ đặc trưng của Việt Nam, với các bảng màu thu hút sự chú ý, từ màu xanh lá cây tươi đến màu cam hoàng hôn, tạo nên một biểu tượng mang kịch nghệ đầy sến súa, có thể dễ dàng trở thành một phần của một khóa học mang tên “Nhập môn Khám phá Thẩm mỹ Việt Nam những năm 2000”.
Đã từng có một thời, thật sự rất khó để ngăn chặn sự phát triển của các cửa hàng DVD/CD lậu ở Hà Nội. Ngày nay, nếu bạn nhìn vào cửa hàng bán DVD giả/ lậu trước đây ở Phố Hàng Bài, bạn sẽ thấy một số thứ: bìa CD album của Taylor Swift trước thời kỳ tóc nàng ca sĩ này được tẩy trắng, một bản sao của “Now That’s What I Call Music 54,” một bản nhái của Dawn of The Planet of the Apes, một bản thu âm của “Cats” (album nhạc kịch, không phải phim). Toàn bộ cửa hàng bị mắc kẹt trong một quá khứ không xa, không có người bán hay khách hàng. Giữa một Hà Nội nhộn nhịp, nơi từng được mệnh danh là “Thủ đô của băng đĩa lậu” giờ nằm khiêm nhường, ẩn mình lặng lẽ trong một góc phía trước của một khu ký túc xá.
Trong những năm 1980 và 1990, các thiết bị như máy quay video, đầu CD và tivi từng khá xa lạ và mới mẻ đối với thế hệ cha mẹ tôi. Giờ đây, những điều đó chỉ còn là tàn tích của quá khứ. Mọi người không còn cần chúng để xem phim online trên các nền tảng trực tuyến nữa. Nếu bây giờ bạn nhắc đến thời đại đĩa DVD lậu, có lẽ mọi người sẽ vẫn còn nhận ra, nhưng ít ai có thể chỉ ra trên bản đồ nơi tìm thấy những tàn tích của quá khứ này.
Những ngày này, khi Tết sắp đến gần, tôi lại nhớ lại nhiều tiêu đề các bài báo mà tôi đã thấy khi còn trẻ, thảo luận về vấn đề cấp bách về đĩa lậu và đĩa nhái – những câu chuyện về việc cảnh sát địa phương phát hiện ra hàng nghìn đĩa CD lậu quanh dịp Tết, cũng như nhiều phim hài nhái, thứ luôn được săn đón nhiều hơn khi không có lịch phát sóng lại các chương trình hài xuân của đài truyền hình. Quan điểm chung của báo chí thời đó là những sản phẩm này gây ra sự cạnh tranh không lành mạnh cho các công ty thu âm chân chính, và gây ra những lo ngại nghiêm trọng về việc kiểm duyệt.
Nhưng với tư cách là một người lớn lên với phương tiện truyền thông lậu, tôi không nghĩ rằng đĩa lậu chỉ đơn thuần là thứ gì đó mà nhẹ nhất là không liên quan và tệ nhất là có hại. Thay vào đó, tôi tin rằng việc mua băng đĩa lậu có một sức hấp dẫn riêng, mà người ta chỉ có thể hiểu được khi đã trải nghiệm nó.
Kinh đô giải trí giá rẻ của Hà Nội
Đầu những năm 2000, nạn đĩa lậu ở Hà Nội đạt mức cao kỷ lục. Những người bán đĩa DVD lậu có mặt khắp nơi trên khắp chợ Giời, chợ Đồng Xuân hoặc rải rác trên các mặt tiền của các khu dân cư trên các tuyến phố như Thợ Nhuộm, Hàng Bài.
Ngày xưa đĩa lậu là một ngành kinh doanh béo bở. Năm 2007, một bài báo trên Quân Đội Nhân Dân đưa tin rằng trong khi đĩa nhạc gốc được bán với giá 28.000–35.000 đồng, thì một phiên bản lậu có thể bán với giá chỉ bằng một phần nhỏ là 6.000–8.000 đồng. Trên hết, những chiếc đĩa chính hãng của Paris by Night, đỉnh cao tuyệt đối của làng giải trí Việt ở hải ngoại, và được nhiều gia đình yêu thích thời bấy giờ, rất đắt và khó tìm ở Việt Nam. Sự nổi tiếng thường trực của chương trình này là nguyên nhân khiến nhiều người xem rơi vào tay những kẻ bán đĩa lậu. Ngoài DVD Paris by Night, video ghi hình live show của những tên tuổi lớn như Mỹ Tâm, Bằng Kiều, Lệ Quyên đứng thứ hai. Các cô cậu choai choai và thanh niên vào cuối những năm 2010 là khán giả chính của các bộ phim nước ngoài. Các áp phích của The Mummy Returns, Mission Impossible, Harry Potter và các bộ phim bom tấn khác của Hollywood được dán khắp các cửa hàng DVD để thu hút người qua đường.

Sự quyến rũ kỳ quặc của trải nghiệm mua đĩa lậu
Mua DVD gợi nhớ về thời kỳ hoài cổ trước khi có sự xuất hiện của các trang web phát trực tuyến hoặc thậm chí tải xuống trên internet. Trong các cửa hàng DVD ở Hà Nội, mọi người từng tụ tập trên những chiếc ghế nhựa nhỏ, gợi nhớ đến những quán trà đá điển hình, tạo sự cân bằng giữa tính chất tạm bợ và cộng đồng của hoạt động này. Trong khi đó, hình thức bên ngoài của những chiếc đĩa CD này về cơ bản lại rất có mùi… sến. Hình ảnh theo chủ nghĩa tối đa, với tất cả những người biểu diễn trên trang bìa, thật nhiều đến chướng cả mắt. Đúng như tinh thần của các phương tiện truyền thông giả mạo, các nhân viên thường tỏ ra chán nản và không hào hứng với sản phẩm của mình. Không giống như một anh chàng làm phim “chuyên gia” bán đĩa DVD đích thực để kiếm sống — nhưng chủ yếu vì đam mê — mà tôi gặp ở Hà Nội, người luôn cập nhật cho khách hàng thường xuyên của mình về bộ hộp Marilyn Monroe mới mà anh ấy vừa mua được từ Amazon, những người bán hàng tại các cửa hàng đĩa lậu thờ ơ đến cùng cực với nội dung của những chiếc đĩa DVD mà người mua đang tìm kiếm.
Do lượng khách hàng đông, đặc biệt là gần dịp cuối năm, các cửa hàng lậu chủ yếu được đứng bán bởi rất nhiều người ở độ tuổi 20, hầu hết đều là thành viên trong gia đình chủ quán. Khách hàng sẽ yêu cầu một chiếc DVD cụ thể, chỉ để nhận được một chồng đĩa CD cùng thể loại được buộc lại với nhau bằng một sợi dây chun màu vàng kinh điển, kèm theo lời chỉ dẫn nửa vời: “Chắc nó ở trong đây đấy, cứ chọn đại một cái đi”. Tuy nhiên, việc chọn đĩa DVD cũng có thể là một trò chơi may rủi, vì người ta có thể tình cờ tìm thấy những viên ngọc quý ẩn giấu bất ngờ.

Sự tồn tại rộng rãi của băng đĩa lậu trong các hộ gia đình nói lên nhiều điều về suy nghĩ mà nhiều người Hà Nội mà tôi biết đã có, vào thời điểm mà các lựa chọn giải trí còn chưa dồi dào như bây giờ. Nói cách khác, vì các lựa chọn ít đa dạng hơn hiện nay, nên việc xem đi xem lại một đĩa DVD hoặc nghe một đĩa CD là điều rất bình thường. Sự lặp lại này tạo ra một cảm giác gắn bó cảm xúc kỳ lạ với món đồ vật – cảm giác sở hữu quý giá khiến toàn bộ trải nghiệm giữ chiến lợi phẩm trở nên đáng yêu.
Giống như bất kỳ hình thức hoài niệm nào khác, nỗi nhớ về đĩa lậu cũng có thể dễ dàng bị thổi phồng quá mức. Thành thật mà nói, không thể phủ nhận rằng chất lượng của đĩa lậu khá tệ và có thể dễ dàng gây hại cho đầu DVD vì chất lượng thấp. Đôi khi, tôi gặp phải những tiếng động lạo xạo, giọng người bị ghi đè trong các bộ phim dành cho trẻ em, và có những đĩa chỉ có phụ đề tiếng Bồ Đào Nha – điều này đặc biệt kỳ lạ vì nó đã xảy ra với tôi đến hai lần. Tuy nhiên, những điểm đặc biệt này chỉ có thể có ở trải nghiệm mua đĩa lậu, tạo nên sức hấp dẫn riêng của nó. Bất kỳ người mua DVD lậu nào cũng phải chấp nhận các bản đĩa lậu còn đầy thiếu sót của họ.
Tuy nhiên, có lẽ phần buồn cười nhất khi xem DVD lậu là phần lồng tiếng Việt tệ đến mức nào trong hầu hết các trường hợp. Tiếng Việt được lồng tiếng không chỉ khó nghe mà còn thường không đồng bộ với hình ảnh. Bất kỳ ai, kể cả những người không biết tiếng Anh, đều có thể nhận ra điều này ngay lập tức. Bất chấp sai sót này, việc mua một đĩa mới thường có nghĩa là dịp để mời những người bạn thân nhất của mình đến xem cùng nhau.
Ghi nhớ băng đĩa lậu – cả cái xấu và cái tốt
Điều đáng lưu ý là tôi không viết bài suy ngẫm tích cực này để bảo vệ nạn vi phạm bản quyền, hoặc đưa ra bất kỳ tranh luận dứt khoát nào biện hộ cho việc vi phạm bản quyền như một phần của văn hóa. Đồng thời, cũng phải công bằng mà ghi nhận sự hữu ích của những đĩa DVD này trong việc mang lại sự giải trí cho những người có hoàn cảnh khó khăn mà không phải tốn tiền mua đĩa xịn. Mặc dù hàng lậu và hàng giả khiến phim và băng ghi âm dễ tiếp cận hơn với người nghèo, nhưng cần phải thừa nhận tác động tiêu cực của chúng đối với giới sáng tạo Việt Nam. Trong lịch sử, việc buôn lậu đã ngăn cản nhiều nhạc sĩ và nhà làm phim thu lợi nhuận từ các sản phẩm trí tuệ của họ, và vi phạm bản quyền trực tuyến vẫn là mối lo ngại lớn đối với các nghệ sĩ ngày nay. Vấn đề khá gây tranh cãi này đặt ra câu hỏi về việc chúng nên được ghi nhớ như thế nào.
Trong tâm trí tôi, đĩa lậu và đĩa giả chiếm một vị trí độc nhất trong ký ức văn hóa, không lãng mạn cũng không đặc biệt có tính đạo đức. Nếu thẩm mỹ theo chủ nghĩa tối đa và phong cách thiết kế bìa sến súa vẫn nổi bật đối với bất kỳ ai ngày nay, thì đó chắc hẳn là trong số những người đam mê máy tính, do đã quá say mê với đĩa CD hồi còn nhỏ đến mức lớn lên họ trở thành sinh viên chuyên ngành điện ảnh, hoặc những người Việt Nam lớn tuổi, thường gặp khó khăn khi tìm hiểu phương tiện truyền thông mạng. Cuối cùng, đĩa lậu và đĩa giả không nên chỉ bị phê phán, mà nên được ghi nhớ như những nếp gấp của thời gian, đại diện cho một thời đại mà các phương tiện giải trí rẻ tiền như đĩa CD giả có tính thẩm mỹ riêng và nét quyến rũ kỳ quặc — một thời kỳ tuổi thiếu niên đáng yêu đối với nhiều người.
